From Dave:
Mt. 15:8; Mark 7:6 from Is 29:13; Ez 33:31
- Mt 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
- Mk 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
Old Testament Citations:
“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men. Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid” (Is 29:13-14, KJV).
Notes: the wordplay in Is 29:14 is interesting. “Marvelous” and “wonder” are both (פָּלָא) pala'; this word occurs three times in this verse and “wisdom” “wise” (חָכְמָה) chokmah make the second alliteration while “understanding” and “prudent” both from (בִּינָה) biynah comprise the third alliteration. Then of course a key word is “hid” (סָתַר) cathar. The marvelous work and wonder is that wisdom of men will perish and the understanding of even prudent/wise men shall be hid; i.e. Jesus will be hidden from the wisest of men.
“And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness” (Ez 33:31, KJV).
