Many theologians are willing to make just about anyone into an apostle.
Possessing a classical education which included philosophy, rhetoric and grammar as well as a sophisticated and technical understanding of the nature and functioning of language, Augustine (an early church father consider to be the Father of hermeneutics by many) desired to convince his educated peers that the Bible was to be respected as fine literature. But this contradicts what Paul said. [1]
Augustine was not an apostle. He said that the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament was more reliable than the Hebrew original. This is utter nonsense.
His fundamental error was the proposition that God spoke to man in stories in order that the most simple among fallen men could understand what he wished to communicate. This is contrary to what Jesus said about speaking in parables so they would not understand. [2]
God hid the true meaning from them. [3]
Although the message of the Gospel is simple, and can be understood from the literal message of the Bible, God has hidden the message of the Gospel in the scriptures from the beginning. [4]
Modern theological inventions all come from men who are not apostles.
But since we are to let every man be a liar and God be true [8], outside references are not required to solve the riddles and see the shadows in God's mystery. (This keeps us devoted)
Not only are we not going to bring in extra-biblical books to determine the meaning of scripture, but we will not make apostles out of historians by elevating their writings concerning the meaning of scripture.
We will not make apostles out of document critics. If there were errors to manuscript documents they would spoil the hidden narrative. Once the hidden narrative is discerned, the proper document can be discerned between competing claims.
We will not accept what God has shown you personally, unless He has shown it to you through the scriptures and it is validated by the rules.
Consequence of using outside resources: You make the historian, or the document specialist, or the PhD-seeking student, into an apostle giving him power over the interpretation of scripture.
